The First Impression
There are a million grand stories waiting to be told, and I
think a few of them are mine. Narration and storytelling have always been
potent forces in my life and work. Much of what I have created in the past few
years has had some sort of relation to fairy tales, myths and dreams. Fantasy is
a subject that I feel shall be present in my work for quite some time. Our
culture often dismisses it as nonsensical and unimportant when really the human
psyche depends upon it to survive. We readily accept that fairies and demons
don’t exist, but we have severe difficulty recognizing that the same is true of
time and national borders.
The human body also has a strong role in my artwork. As human beings I feel we are naturally inclined to the figure as both idea and image. By examining the body we can investigate our relationship to one another and to ourselves. Our experiences may be radically different, but the body is the common vehicle through which all of mankind experiences the world within and without.
As with anything in today's society, one can make a theme or story line based off of that inspiring thing. My obsession with the Seven Deadly Sins combines my passion for fantasy and realism. As mystical as they are, they are brought to life through humans. You can look into anything and realize a Sin connected with it. I love the challenge and array of narration associated to each Sin.
These three foci are also joined by a fourth interest, color. So much of how we feel about the world is dictated by this element. It makes us feel, it makes us desire, it nauseates us and enrages us. Colors can hold a unique power individually, or take on a different in relation to other colors. Color can evoke something that both the body and fantasy can, but in its own unique way. It can create feeling, it can create energy, and at its very best it can create ‘spirit’.
Art can hold a unique power individually. Artwork is
the creation that both the body and mind combine into one own unique way. I am
experienced in the traditional arts concentrating in oil painting, graphite
drawing, and painting on shoes. My talents extend to digital photography,
design, and illustration, and my newest endeavor is animation.
