About Me

There are a million grand stories waiting to be told, and I think a few of them are mine. I am experienced in the traditional arts concentrating in oil painting, graphite drawing, and painting on shoes. My talents extend to digital photography, design, and illustration, and my newest endeavor is animation.

Final

I loved creating an animation. I can see why there are teams of people dedicated to individual characters; specific details; and so much more.

Through my research and enjoying the little things of this animation, and taking breaks, I played around with other ways to animate and found I really love animating words and settings. I thought I would share these with you :

Module 6: Final Submission

Kaphrus

The thought behind this piece is to be a version of a movie trailer for my book turned animation. I rendered this in Illustrator and Photoshop, and brought to life through Flash.

Some insight behind the creation:

  • I used this horse running sequence I found on  http://imgarcade.com/1/horse-running-sequence  as a reference.
  • The sound effects and music were found on Sounddogs.com.
  • The backgrounds were the easiest because I had to create one base cell and duplicated it over and over again. I moved some things around to give the impression of a moving background.
  • The running scene in the forest clearing was over 120 cells.
  • I used the cloud filter in Photoshop to give the impression of the smoke rising and disappearance of Kaphrus.

Module 5 Part 2: Storyboard

I used Storyboardthat.com to create this story board. I have painted the scenes a little differently, but don't think the difference of storyboard verses final will be problematic.

Module 5: Final Project Sketches

The Escape

The Journey of The Chosen One

My final will be an animation trailer of the story I about my character, Kaphrus. Using Illustrator, Photoshop, and Flash I will bring this trailer to life.

This trailer will showcase a segment of what Kaphrus endures. Since I won't have verbal lines and a voice over, I plan on adding slides of lines that would be in the book, and possibly said in a movie version.

I will have a dungeon setting and open forest setting which makes up part of the plot and the bulk of the work.

Module 4: Kaphrus final

I will not be submitting this into the competition.

Using Photoshop, a little bit of Illustrator, and Flash, I created this image. I imported my hand drawn sketch and worked in layers to create this final image. My goals were to create a female heroic image mixed with advanced technology.  I made the title animated because I am thinking about the future and how book covers may be digital one day. My idea is a cross between the digital photo frames that are presently out, and Harry Potter's idea of the animated newspapers and posters.

I never like to do backgrounds for my pieces. I just don't have that type of talent. I kept the background simple.

Typography is not my strongest, but I like the chosen font. It is strong and fantasy like. I chose the traditional position of the title at the top and the author name at the bottom. I purposely made the 'authors' name a non focal point because I did not want to come across as an 'author'. If this were a clients book I was designing the author's name would stand out and be bigger. The color choice could have been different, I see that now.

Module 4 Sketches

Spectrum

http://www.spectrumfantasticart.com/entryinfo.php

My submission entails artwork for the cover of a book. I like this contest because there are few restrictions. A lot of the guidelines were focused on the submission part of the contest.

I chose to base this artwork off of a mini story idea I came up with. It is a fantasy story about a girl, Kaphrus, who, unbeknownst to herself and her fellow villagers, is the chosen one. She is an independent adventure going girl. A long time ago there was an evil powerful creature who took over and destroyed all of the worlds in the realm. A group of 4 individuals managed to capture him and ban him into a containment spell. Another evil individual managed to find and free this contained evil. It is now up to Kaphrus to find the hidden scrolls that contain the chants to put this evil creature away, once and for all.

I want the focus to be on the female character. She is bold, strong, and confident. There is no damsel in distress here.

Module 3: Final Web design

Candy

While I was researching website designs I noticed a lot of rectangles and straightforward layouts. I wanted to create a not so traditional web page layout for a portfolio because it should showcase a unique and talented artist. Colors are a key component. The visual aesthetic draws a person in.  Easy accessibility and navigating around a site is also an important factor.  Sometimes highlighting the word of the chosen section can be lost. By bolding the words of the section a person is presently viewing, aids in a person knowing what they clicked on. I utilized Flash for the main page font animation, Illustrator for the graphic art on the main page, and Photoshop for the rest.

Module 3: Website Sketches

Candy

As an artist I try to be different. I know websites follow a traditional format, but I don't want traditional. I like the unique. Some of my designs reflect the standard website appearance, while some are different.

I focused a lot of my efforts on the color scheme and ease of a page. These two things attract and hold a person's attention to a site.

I found this to be a little challenging because I was building this site as a portfolio and service site for my talents, and I hope to one day figure out Dreamweaver and create this layout. I am a multi-faceted artist with a lot to offer. I found the challenge in trying to create a clean and attractive site to express everything I do. I tried to crunch things together and categorize, but this may not be the best way to go about it. I have considered separating the photography from the traditional art into different websites, but I think this takes away from me as an artist.

Some of the images are my own and some I found through Google search to fill the space.

Module 2: Logo Final

EmpireX

"The newest revolution in the online gaming industry"

- PC Gamer Magazie

When I first saw the title of the company, I immediately envisioned Roman type font and associated role-playing games with this company. The company, EmpireX, needed to be represented as big and bold. I went through a friends collection to get a feel of video game logos. A lot of them were represented by the title itself. Once in awhile I saw a symbolic object or symbol included as a letter or within the logo.

My approach to creating the two games within the company started off with coming up with titles. My titles needed to have a ring to them and mysterious enough to have the viewer want to play them. Ultimately I came up with "Ace of Spades" and " Keys to the Kingdom". "AOS" is a mystical-realism game where the main character gains certain magical powers and weapons along their journey to defeat the terrors they encounter and rescues those in need. The character comes from a prophecy that names them a "Spade" ( like the equivalence of savior)  who needs to find the main evil behind the destruction of the worlds- human and creature.
"Keys" is my rendition of Disney's "Kingdom Hearts" game. In my version the main character is on a mission to collect five keys to five special doors that is holding each of the fairies captive. Without these fairies, nature and the seasons are unable to function and flourish.

Artist Statement

   The First Impression

There are a million grand stories waiting to be told, and I think a few of them are mine. Narration and storytelling have always been potent forces in my life and work. Much of what I have created in the past few years has had some sort of relation to fairy tales, myths and dreams. Fantasy is a subject that I feel shall be present in my work for quite some time. Our culture often dismisses it as nonsensical and unimportant when really the human psyche depends upon it to survive. We readily accept that fairies and demons don’t exist, but we have severe difficulty recognizing that the same is true of time and national borders.

The human body also has a strong role in my artwork. As human beings I feel we are naturally inclined to the figure as both idea and image. By examining the body we can investigate our relationship to one another and to ourselves. Our experiences may be radically different, but the body is the common vehicle through which all of mankind experiences the world within and without.

As with anything in today's society, one can make a theme or story line based off of that inspiring thing. My obsession with the Seven Deadly Sins combines my passion for fantasy and realism. As mystical as they are, they are brought to life through humans. You can look into anything and realize a Sin connected with it. I love the challenge and array of narration associated to each Sin.

These three foci are also joined by a fourth interest, color. So much of how we feel about the world is dictated by this element. It makes us feel, it makes us desire, it nauseates us and enrages us. Colors can hold a unique power individually, or take on a different in relation to other colors. Color can evoke something that both the body and fantasy can, but in its own unique way. It can create feeling, it can create energy, and at its very best it can create ‘spirit’.

Art can hold a unique power individually. Artwork is the creation that both the body and mind combine into one own unique way. I am experienced in the traditional arts concentrating in oil painting, graphite drawing, and painting on shoes. My talents extend to digital photography, design, and illustration, and my newest endeavor is animation.
